The Isle Evrima Beginner Guide
Your first hour on The Isle: Evrima. Pick a starter species, learn the map, eat the right things, drink enough water, and survive long enough to reach adulthood.
1 · Pick a forgiving starter species
Some species are far more forgiving than others to learn the game on. For your first dino, pick from:
- Dryosaurus — small, fast herbivore. Hardest to kill because you outrun almost everything.
- Hypsilophodon — tiny, sees in the dark, abundant cover.
- Gallimimus — fast omni; great for learning the map without much combat risk.
Avoid Tyrannosaurus, Deinosuchus, or Allosaurus as a first dino — they are slow at low growth and players will hunt you on sight because they want the apex kill.
2 · Find water within 5 minutes
Thirst kills faster than hunger in Evrima. The first thing you do after spawning is locate a water source. Lakes, rivers, and ponds all work; small puddles count for some species but not all. The Gateway map has several large central lakes and a long west-coast river — head downhill from your spawn and you will usually find water within two minutes. Drink to full.
See the Gateway map guide for major water sources marked.
3 · Eat the right diet
Every species has a preferred diet. For herbivores: a mix of ferns, fronds, fruits, and bark. For carnivores: corpses, eggs, and live kills. Eating outside your preferred diet still fills your hunger bar but slows growth dramatically. The in-game journal lists your dino's preferred foods.
For most herbivores, a balanced 1:1:1:1 split across the four diet macros pushes growth speed to maximum. Eating only one food type slows you to a crawl.
4 · Stay near sanctuaries until 30% grown
Sanctuaries are zones marked yellow on the map where carnivore players are encouraged to stay out. They are not enforced by the game, but most experienced players respect them. Juvenile herbivores in sanctuaries are largely safe. Use the first 20–30 minutes of growth to learn the terrain around your spawn before venturing out.
5 · Listen and look constantly
Evrima rewards paranoia. Carnivores rely on the "sneak walk" to close distance silently. You will hear them stepping on twigs and brushing plants if you turn down music and watch the horizon. Running in a straight line through open ground is the easiest way to die. Hug treelines, move in short sprints, and stop often to scan.
6 · Use Discord to your advantage
After registering with /register, run /storedino the first time you reach 80% growth. That bookmarks your dino — if you die later, you can /claimdino to come back at the same growth, same skin, same Prime conditions. It is the single biggest quality-of-life difference between our server and vanilla Evrima.
